Re:Nylon

Nylon has been a key material for Prada. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line won the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready diffusion line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly reNylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles including bags for belts, a shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag and two backpacks made from repurposed ECONYL fabric made from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber wastes sourced all over the world.

The material that is repurposed is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer that makes Econyl fabric from regenerated nylon waste, which can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality. It's part of a wider initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags and a pair of ECONYL boots and shoes, and a selection of clothing made of the same fabric.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", a video series that highlights the innovative process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

read here  of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is its most significant reduction in virgin nylon to date. It will save the company 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. This move will also lower the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tonnes. The label has just gone fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the most recent sustainable initiative.

Recycled Nylon

While it is more beneficial for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable, and will sit in landfills or oceans for decades until it is broken down into smaller particles that can cause harm to wildlife. The fabric is also not breathable and may shed microplastics when washed. However, it requires 50 percent less energy to produce when compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag fabrics like wool or cotton.

The fabric is made of recycled plastics and petroleum, that is made from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources as well as carbon emissions from production virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag fabrics, as it doesn't need to be dyed and woven. This makes it an excellent option for bags that are frequently used, like yoga or gym gear.

Recycled nylon is more durable and flexible than cotton or polyester which are both traditional fabrics. It is also able to stand up to a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. The material is lightweight and is easily cut and stitched to the shape desired for the backpack. Nylon is also a great choice for outdoor gear because it is water resistant and doesn't absorb mildew or odors as easily as other fabrics.

When you're choosing a bag that's sustainable ensure that you look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification tests for chemical residues, as well as environmental and social responsibility. This certification is a good indicator of brands that are transparent and accountable.

Patagonia is a good example. It offers a range of yoga gear and backpacks that are made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. This nylon is made using a closed-loop method that requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. Moreover, the brand supports organisations that work to protect our planet.
